Arthritis is a common condition that causes pain and inflammation in a joint. In the UK, millions of people have arthritis or similar conditions that affect the joints. Arthritis affects people of all ages, including children.

Types of Arthritis

Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the 2 most common types of arthritis.

Osteoarthritis

It is the most common type of arthritis in the UK usually affecting people on their mid-40's and older. It's more common in women but it can occur at any age as a result of an injury. It can be associated to other immunomodulated conditions.

Osteoarthritis initially affects the smooth cartilage lining of the joint which changes the normal shape of the joint causing swelling and the formation of bony spurs called osteophytes. Severe loss of cartilage will eventually alter the shape of the joint and forcing the bones out of their normal position.

The most commonly affected joints are those in the:

  • Hands
  • Spine
  • Kknees
  • Hips

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is less common than osteoarthritis affecting people between 30 and 50 years old. Women are more likely to be affected than men.

Rheumatoid arthritis is caused by a reaction of the immune system in the joints. This leads to pain and swelling which will eventually cause , the body's immune system targets affected joints, which leads to pain, swelling and bone and cartilage break down.

Rheumatoid arthritis can also cause other changes on your body. Please contact your doctor before getting any treatment.
